You’ve been trying to get pregnant but somehow nothing seems to work. Monitoring your fertility cycle is one way to help you improve your chances.
Why should you do it and will it make a difference?
- Your cycle is never the same
Your menstrual cycle varies depending on how your body is doing and even with how you are feeling. Hormone levels, stress or underlying medical conditions could influence your menstrual flow. Menstrual flow changes, so the window for ovulation changes too.
- You’re only fertile for a limited amount of time
The egg will only be available for fertilization within 12 to 24 hours. That’s not a lot of time.
However, you will remain fertile for 5 to 7 days. This is because healthy sperm can survive in the female reproductive system for a matter of 3 to 5 days after intercourse.
- It will improve your odds of getting pregnant
Finding the perfect timing is one of the keys to getting pregnant. Information always gives you an advantage. Now that you know when you are ovulating, you are more likely to have a successful pregnancy.
How will you monitor your fertility cycle?
Here’s what you’ll need to do:
You will be needing to use a pen and paper as your log or you can use a phone app to help you record the following information:
- Record your basal body temperature
This is your body temperature at rest. Before ovulation, the body temperature ranges from 97 to 97.5°F. During ovulation, you will notice an increase in your basal body temperature by 0.5°F.
- Check your cervical mucus daily
Cervical mucus acts as a buffer between your cervix and uterus.
When you are not ovulating, it takes a thick and creamy form to prevent the sperm from crossing over since you can’t get pregnant anyway.
However, during ovulation, the cervical mucus changes in consistency and appearance into something akin to egg whites and helps the sperm make their travel toward your egg.
You can check your cervical mucus by using a toilet paper to wipe before you pee or by checking the discharge on your underwear.
- Make note of when your menstrual cycle starts.
This is so you can get familiar with when you usually ovulate.
- Track the dates that you have sexual intercourse.
It most likely will increase your chances of getting pregnant.
